Among the most widely circulated quotations attributed to Alexander von Humboldt is the sentence, “The most dangerous of all worldviews is the worldview of those who have never viewed the world.” The Austrian philosopher and quotation researcher Gerald Krieghofer (1953–2025) was able to demonstrate that this bon mot almost certainly did not originate with Humboldt. This essay acknowledges Krieghofer’s work on researching quotations that are falsely attributed to Humboldt.
